CIVIL SOCIETY LEADERS ENGAGE SWEDISH OFFICIALS ON DEMOCRACY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Three leading civil society organizations in Liberia have met with key Swedish officials to discuss the vital role of civil society in strengthening democracy, promoting accountability, and combating corruption. The meeting brought together representatives from Naymote Partners for Democratic Development, the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), and Integrity Watch Liberia.

The civil society leaders engaged with Helen Eduards, Director General for International Development Cooperation, and Karl Backéus, the Swedish Ambassador to Liberia. They highlighted the importance of civic engagement in fostering democratic governance and ensuring social accountability. While acknowledging challenges, they expressed optimism about Liberia’s progress in sustaining peace and building strong democratic institutions.

The organizations emphasized that a vibrant civil society is crucial to a functioning democracy, advocating for continued collaboration between international partners and local initiatives. They expressed deep appreciation for Sweden’s longstanding support, which they said has empowered civil society groups to drive meaningful change in Liberia.

Sweden remains a key partner in Liberia’s development, supporting initiatives that promote transparency, good governance, and citizen participation. The civil society leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working towards a more accountable and democratic Liberia.
