MONROVIA – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of operations at Green Forest Camps 1, 2, and 3 in Montserrado County District #1 and arrested two Chinese nationals over allegations of severe environmental pollution and degradation linked to the company’s mining activities.
The action was taken during the EPA’s ongoing Nationwide Environmental Compliance Monitoring Exercise, which authorities say is aimed at assessing environmental violations and enforcing compliance with Liberia’s environmental protection laws.
According to the agency, inspectors who visited two operational sites connected to the company observed what they described as extensive environmental destruction resulting from mining activities in the area.
The EPA said the enforcement measures were intended to prevent further environmental damage and ensure accountability under Liberian law. However, the dramatic shutdown and arrests have already sparked debate over whether the agency followed proper legal procedures and provided sufficient evidence to support its actions.
