FINANCE MINISTRY LAUNCHES SECTORAL REVIEW TO FAST-TRACK DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) has launched a series of intensive sectoral review sessions aimed at improving government budget execution and addressing persistent delays in the implementation of development projects.

The initiative began on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, with a visit to the Ministry of Public Works, one of the country’s leading institutions in infrastructure development. Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, who led the delegation, stressed the urgency of accelerating progress and eliminating bottlenecks within government operations.

Minister Ngafuan said Liberians are growing impatient with delays and want to see meaningful progress. He pointed to ongoing challenges and called for swift action, urging ministries and agencies to take full responsibility for timely execution.

“These sessions are not just about talk,” Minister Ngafuan asserted. “They are about results. After this process, there should be no excuse for continued delays in project implementation.”

Referencing recent international engagements, including discussions in Kuwait and at the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings, Minister Ngafuan said Liberia had secured renewed support from development partners, including funding to resume work on the Gbarnga Mendikorma road project.

However, he cautioned that without improved internal coordination and execution, even secured resources would not yield results. He underscored the importance of moving with “speed, quality, and excellence” and praised the collaborative efforts between the MFDP and the Ministry of Public Works.

Public Works Minister Roland Lafayette Giddings welcomed the MFDP team and echoed the call for greater efficiency. He noted that government institutions must first resolve internal inefficiencies if they are to hold contractors and partners accountable for delivery.

As part of the ongoing review, MFDP is expected to visit the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday and the Ministry of Health on Thursday, with additional engagements scheduled for the following week.

Minister Ngafuan issued a final warning: “Let it be clear, delays will no longer be tolerated. We owe the Liberian people real progress.”
