MONROVIA – A disturbing video circulating on social media, specifically on Facebook, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, has triggered public outcry, showing Director K. Massayan Sorsor of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) physically assaulting an elderly man identified as Pa Gayflor. The footage has ignited demands for justice, with activists, including Martin Kollie, calling for Sorsor’s immediate dismissal and prosecution.
In the video, Sorsor is reportedly seen striking Gayflor, an act activists describe as a brazen abuse of power. Adding to the controversy, Sorsor is heard boasting, “Let him go to court. I don’t care.” According to the victim’s family, the official further bragged about his wealth and influence, claiming that nothing would come of the incident.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with calls for President Joseph Boakai and Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan to take swift action. Activists argue that such behavior undermines public trust and contradicts the government’s commitment to protecting marginalized citizens.
In response, the MFDP issued a statement acknowledging the video and confirming that the matter is before the court. The ministry stated that its legal and human resources departments are reviewing internal policies in accordance with the Civil Service Standing Orders. However, the ministry did not indicate whether Sorsor would face disciplinary action.
Despite this statement, public pressure continues to mount. Human rights organizations, civil society groups, and ordinary Liberians are demanding accountability. Many argue that without decisive action, officials will continue to exploit their positions without consequences.
