POLICE CHARGE TWO MORE IN CAPITOL BUILDING ARSON CASE

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Authorities have intensified their crackdown on the December 18, 2024, arson attack on the Capitol Building, arresting two more suspects linked to the crime. The Liberia National Police on Wednesday, February 5, formally charged and forwarded Jerry Pokah, alias Tyrese, and Kivin Bah, alias Kaba, to court, adding them to an expanding list of individuals accused of orchestrating the fire.

Investigators believe the duo conspired with Thomas Etheridge and Eric Sasay, who are already facing prosecution. Several other suspects, including John Nyantee, Amos Koffa, Stephen Broh, Patience Bestman, and Grace Johnson, remain at large as authorities work to apprehend all those involved. The charges against Pokah and Bah include arson, criminal conspiracy, reckless burning, and destruction of property.

The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of December 18, caused extensive damage to the Representative wing of the Capitol Building, particularly the Joint Chamber, fourth floor, and dome. The attack was reportedly carried out through a well-coordinated plot involving suspects who entered the building under the cover of darkness and set it ablaze after dousing parts of the structure with gasoline.

Investigators say Pokah has admitted to attending a secret meeting where the arson was allegedly planned. According to his statement, the gathering took place in Jallah Town, near a used car lot, where co-conspirator John Nyantee allegedly provided $100 for the operation. Pokah reportedly kept $55 while giving the remaining $45 to Bah.
