FORMER FINANCE MINISTER TWEAH PLEDGES FULL COOPERATION IN NYESWA’S DEATH INVESTIGATION

Date:

MONROVIA – Former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah has announced his willingness to cooperate with the Liberia National Police regarding the investigation into the death of former Internal Audit Agency Director Emmanuel Barthan Nyeswa. Tweah has called for truth and clarity in a case clouded by political narratives, expressing hope that the investigation will reveal the facts and dispel misinformation.

In a detailed statement, Tweah revealed he was contacted by Cllr. Norris Tweah, who informed him of the police’s intent to speak with individuals connected to Nyeswa. The police are particularly interested in those who were seen with Nyeswa on the night before his death or visited him at JFK Memorial Hospital.

Tweah described how he learned of the incident. On the morning of Nyeswa’s death, he received a call from Norris, prompting him to contact Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah, the government’s chief medical officer, and Bill Twehway, a close friend of Nyeswa. Together, they went to the hospital where Nyeswa had been taken.

He stressed the need for an impartial investigation under the new government, aiming to establish the truth about Nyeswa’s death and other similar cases. Tweah committed to transparency, promising to share the information he provides to the police with the public.

On July 23, Tweah, along with River Cess County Senator Bill T. Twehway, former Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah, and Mr. Trokon Williams, was summoned by the Liberia National Police for questioning in connection to the investigation.

Nyeswa was found dead at his residence on October 10, 2020, under suspicious circumstances that followed the deaths of three other auditors. Albert Peters, Gifty Lama, and George Fanbutu died within days of each other, raising concerns about the safety of auditors in the country.

The mysterious nature of these deaths, particularly Nyeswa’s, has fueled speculation and fear. Reports indicate Nyeswa spent the evening at D’Calabash, an amusement spot, with friends before returning home after midnight.

Tweah’s engagement with the investigation signals a crucial step in seeking justice and accountability. He emphasized the importance of authentic truth-telling to counter the “demons of lies” that have plagued political discourse over the past years.

This development emphasizes the need for thorough investigations to address these troubling incidents, restore public confidence, and ensure the safety of professionals working in Liberia.
