LIBERIA: UL UNVEILS PRESIDENT WEAH, DR. NELSON, MRS. SAWYER PORTRAITS

Date:

…Holds Colorful Display of Arts and Crafts Exhibitions

MONROVIA – The President of the University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson, Jr. on Monday unveiled the academic portrait of the President of the Republic of Liberia and Visitor of the University of Liberia, His Excellency Dr. George Mannah Weah.

President Weah’s portrait was unveiled during the Arts and Crafts Exhibition marking the official kickoff of the 103rd Convocation ceremony of the University of Liberia. The Arts and Crafts Exhibition was organized by the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities through the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, formerly known as the Arts and Crafts Department.

One of the high marks of this colorful display of images from reputable galleries was the official unveiling of the academic portrait of the President of the University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson, and the portrait of Mrs. Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer, Chair of the Amos C. Sawyer Foundation and Deputy Foreign Minister for Administration.

The UL President’s portrait was unveiled by the Vice President for Administration of the University of Liberia, Mrs. Benetta Joko Tarr. About a year ago, the College unveiled the portrait of the late Prof. Dr. Amos C. Sawyer.  The four important portraits are placed in the College Exhibition Center.

These two great and significant portraits of President Weah and Dr. Nelson were painted by Mr. Charles Dickerson, one of the newly hired faculty members of the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Huminites. The College is headed by Prof. Dr. Josephus M. Gray. The College feels proud in conducting exhibitions every year to showcase the talents of faculty and students of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.

The has continued to evolve since 1862, when the Government of Liberia, 15 years after independence, authorized the establishment of a college. The College has been powered by continuous revolution and ongoing efforts to improve and provide quality education and research as well as to enhance students’ creative thinking and approaches to contemporary situations.

The mission and vision of Amos C. Sawyer College are aligned with those of the University of Liberia. The College’s vision is to transform the way that the world is understood, how knowledge is created, and how problems are approached and solved.  The College was founded on an agenda of social responsibility to Liberian Society and the world to provide educational access to citizens and other nationals across the globe. The driving forces behind that agenda have become an integral part of the philosophy of the University of Liberia.

The campus is situated on a major highway and surrounded by friendly communities. Amos C. Sawyer College is an interesting paradox. It’s a small, supportive community hosted on a single roof of the Academic Complex of the University of Liberia.

The Amos C. Sawyer College is just a place where anyone soon knows every face and it’s the best place with a beautiful landscape, with access to every possible amenity; but it sits at the heart of the university’s Fendall Campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County, few miles away from the national capital, Monrovia.
