LIBERIAN SENATE REPLACES INTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTRY WITH LOCAL GOV’T MINISTRY

Date:

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Internal Affairs has been officially dissolved following a decisive vote by the Liberian Senate, paving the way for the establishment of the Ministry of Local Government. This legislative action is seen as a major step toward advancing decentralization and empowering local authorities in line with the objectives of the Local Government Act of 2018.

Lawmakers backing the decision argued that shifting administrative control to local governments would enhance public participation in governance and promote efficiency in service delivery. The new framework is expected to bring government closer to the people by granting communities greater autonomy over development initiatives and decision-making processes.

With the passage of this law, the Ministry of Local Government will assume oversight of local administrations and lead efforts to strengthen grassroots governance. Supporters of the transition maintain that devolution of power will create a more inclusive system that ensures national policies reflect the priorities of local communities.

While the Ministry of Internal Affairs ceases to exist, the Senate has assured that previous contracts, decisions, and agreements authorized under its jurisdiction will remain legally binding. Officials believe this safeguard will provide continuity and prevent administrative disruptions as the new ministry takes shape.
