NPA ESTABLISHES NEW DEPARTMENT TO ENFORCE MARITIME SAFETY AND BOOST REVENUE

Date:

MONROVIA – The National Port Authority (NPA) has introduced a new department to strengthen safety regulations and improve oversight of hazardous shipments entering Liberia. The newly established Port State Coordination Department will play a key role in enforcing international maritime standards while ensuring the country benefits financially from regulated cargo management.

At a commissioning ceremony held at the NPA headquarters, top executives underscored the importance of this initiative. Deputy Managing Director for Administration, Hon. James R. Bernard, emphasized that the department’s creation marks a major step in securing Liberia’s ports. He pointed out that dangerous shipments require careful monitoring to prevent safety hazards and that the department will be instrumental in ensuring compliance with global regulations.

Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Emmanuel M. Horton Sr., highlighted that the department’s role extends beyond safety. He explained that its work will contribute to Liberia’s international reputation in maritime affairs. By strictly regulating cargo entry, he noted, the department will reinforce the integrity of port operations and create a framework for sustainable management of incoming shipments.

Comptroller Varney Barfalie, CPA, focused on the financial impact of this move, stating that greater oversight will lead to increased revenue for the NPA. He pointed out that proper monitoring of high-risk shipments will help ensure the government collects the necessary tariffs and fees associated with hazardous cargo. This, he said, will improve financial transparency and efficiency within the port system.
