NPHIL AND MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY FORGE SCIENTIFIC PARTNERSHIP TO STRENGTHEN DISEASE SURVEILLANCE

Date:

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – The Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, has announced a new science research collaboration between NPHIL and the Science Research Center at Morgan State University (MSU) in Baltimore, Maryland. The partnership is expected to enhance Liberia’s public health capabilities in disease detection, diagnostic development, and scientific training.

Dr. Nyan, in a statement issued Friday, May 9, 2025, said the collaborative effort will focus on three main areas: development of diagnostic tests, genetic sequencing of pathogens, and integrating artificial intelligence through machine-learning opportunities for young Liberian biomedical scientists.

He emphasized that the partnership will support the creation of a pipeline for producing diagnostic tools that can aid in the early detection and control of infectious diseases in Liberia and the region. Additionally, the agreement aims to foster joint efforts in the genetic sequencing of priority pathogens, which is crucial for understanding how diseases spread and for guiding more effective public health responses.

Another key component of the collaboration is the introduction of artificial intelligence in biomedical research, particularly through machine-learning technologies. This will include training programs and research opportunities for young scientists working at NPHIL, equipping them with the tools to apply AI in disease modeling and outbreak prediction.

Dr. Nyan described the collaboration as a significant step in strengthening public health preparedness and scientific innovation in Liberia. He noted that the partnership aligns with NPHIL’s broader mission to foster international cooperation in advancing health security and research development.

The move comes amid growing global efforts to use science and technology to address emerging health threats and highlights Liberia’s commitment to staying ahead in public health through global partnerships.
