LIBERIA’S FOREIGN MINISTRY CONFIRMS NO IMMEDIATE THREAT TO STUDENTS IN INDIA AMID KASHMIR TENSIONS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the Liberian public that there is no immediate threat to the lives or safety of Liberian students residing in India, despite the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region.

The Ministry’s statement comes in response to heightened concerns following this week’s flare-up of tensions in Kashmir. In a bid to secure the well-being of its citizens abroad, the Ministry held bilateral discussions with the Embassy of the Republic of India in Monrovia and received firm assurances that no Liberians are living, working, or studying near the areas affected by the conflict.

Further reassurance came from the President of the Association of Liberian Students in India, who confirmed that Liberian nationals are not currently facing any danger. However, the Ministry said it will dispatch a delegation to India in the coming days to conduct a firsthand assessment of the security and living conditions of its citizens.

The Ministry also indicated that consultations initiated in 2024 regarding the establishment of a Liberian diplomatic mission in New Delhi are ongoing between the governments of Liberia and India.

In a separate but related matter, the Ministry disclosed that it is working tirelessly to address the situation of Liberians stranded along the Myanmar-Thailand border. With assistance from the Liberian Embassy in Beijing and in coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), efforts are underway to facilitate their entry into Thailand and arrange their repatriation.

Regarding reports of a Liberian student stranded in Ukraine, the Ministry confirmed it is in contact with the student’s family and Ukrainian authorities. It noted that all necessary steps are being taken in accordance with international diplomatic protocols.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of all Liberians living abroad and pledged to continue monitoring global developments that may affect its citizens.
