PRESS UNION OF LIBERIA CONDEMNS RULING PARTY’S SUPPORTERS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Press Union of Liberia has issued a call to all parties involved in the upcoming 2023 Legislative and Presidential Elections to honor the principles set forth in the Farmington Declaration. This declaration underscores the vital importance of upholding a peaceful democratic process and has garnered unanimous support from a diverse range of stakeholders.

In an official statement released on this Wednesday, August 10, 2023, the PUL has urged political entities to prioritize peace and engage in a campaign focused on substantial policy matters. The Press Union of Liberia firmly emphasizes that political parties are duty-bound to uphold the significance of the historic peace commitment, which was collectively endorsed by all presidential candidates on August 2, 2023. This commitment stands as a clear testament to the candidates’ unwavering dedication to fostering a serene atmosphere throughout the electoral proceedings and fostering a sense of unity among the Liberian populace.

Commending the National Elections Commission for its adept management of the electoral process thus far, the PUL underscores the weight of safeguarding Liberia’s hard-earned peace – a cornerstone built upon the principles of democratic governance. The organization earnestly appeals to all political factions to exercise restraint and center their campaigns on issues that resonate with the aspirations of the Liberian people.

Nevertheless, the PUL expresses deep concern and outright condemnation in response to recent incidents of unacceptable behavior demonstrated by specific supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). Specifically, the incident involving the display of a casket embellished with the image of the Unity Party Standard-bearer, Amb. Joseph Boakai, is entirely inappropriate and undermines peace.

Meanwhile, the CDC has issued a statement unequivocally disowning the provocative incident. President George Weah has also openly criticized the conduct of section of the CDC supporters. These actions, as observed by the PUL, stand as tangible demonstrations of adherence to the Farmington Declaration and Liberia’s enduring peace.

The PUL calls upon all political factions, stakeholders, and citizens of Liberia to exercise restraint and actively contribute to fostering a campaign environment characterized by tolerance and peaceful exchange of political ideas.

The Press Union of Liberia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders, ensuring a mature and democratic electoral progression in Liberia.
