PUL COMMENDS SUPREME COURT RULING ON HOUSE LEADERSHIP DISPUTE

Date:

MONROVIA – The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has praised the Supreme Court of Liberia for its decisive ruling in the ongoing leadership conflict within the House of Representatives, describing the Court’s action as a vital reinforcement of the rule of law.

In a statement issued Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the PUL said the Court’s decision on the Amended Bill of Information filed by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa demonstrates an unwavering commitment to justice without fear, favor, or bias. The Union emphasized that the clarity provided by the Supreme Court is crucial for restoring stability to the House, which has been mired in internal conflict over efforts to remove Speaker Koffa.

The PUL called on all members of the House to respect both the letter and spirit of the Court’s ruling and to seek a constitutional resolution to the dispute. According to the statement, lawmakers must prioritize national interests over political divisions, warning that continued infighting could jeopardize Liberia’s peace and democratic progress.

“If the majority of representatives indeed wishes to remove Speaker Koffa, the process must adhere strictly to constitutional procedures,” the statement noted, echoing earlier advice from ECOWAS mediators. The Union stressed that any attempt to shortcut legal processes would only deepen divisions and foster authoritarian practices within the legislature.

The PUL also urged the executive branch, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and the Liberian Senate to avoid actions that could undermine the authority of the Supreme Court. Specifically, the Union cautioned against recognizing or engaging with any parallel leadership structure in the House that lacks constitutional legitimacy.

Signed by PUL President Julius Kanubah, the statement reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to democracy, good governance, and the protection of Liberia’s fragile peace.
