REP. MENSAH URGES INCREASE IN FUNDING FOR LIBERIA NATIONAL POLICE TO ENSURE SAFE ELECTIONS

Date:

LIBERIA – Rep. Moima Briggs Mensah of Bong County District #6 has emphasized the need for an increase in the budget for the Liberia National Police (LNP) ahead of the 2023 presidential, senatorial, and representative elections.

During an appearance on a local radio station, Rep. Briggs stated that the LNP must be a priority in the 2023 fiscal budget as a major stakeholder responsible for ensuring peaceful election conduct. She added that the police need more vehicles and supplies to effectively maintain peace and security during the elections.

Rep. Briggs pledged to work with her colleagues on Capitol Hill to increase the LNP budget reasonably.

She also highlighted the recent discovery of firearms at the National Freeport of Monrovia and the increase in missing child cases, stressing the need for the police to be equipped to handle these challenges.

There have been several calls from the police authority and civil society actors for a budget increase for the LNP and other paramilitary institutions.

In the past, the Inspector General of the LNP, Col. Patrick Sudue, had requested an additional budget of US$6,317,831 for the LNP’s operations to enhance their capacity in combating crime and maintain law and order.

“The shortage of funds had previously impacted the LNP’s ability to purchase vehicles, uniforms, and accessories, and cover fuel and maintenance costs” he stated.

In conclusion, Rep. Briggs emphasized that all election contestants will need the assistance of the police and that the LNP must have the capacity to respond. Credit: William Lloyd
