MONROVIA – In a bold move today, Hon. Taa Zogbe Kartoe Wongbe, representing District #9 in Nimba County, issued a stern warning to the Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, accusing him of poor leadership and questionable practices. Speaking on Saturday, July 13, 2024, Wongbe outlined several counts against Koffa, urging immediate action and transparency.
Wongbe accused Koffa of compromising his independence by working closely with the Executive as a consultant to the Minister of State and the President. He demanded full disclosure of this relationship to maintain legislative integrity.
Highlighting concerns over unauthorized budget alterations by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), Wongbe pointed to a $4.7 million budget line shift and $20 million allocated for presidential projects without legislative approval. He called for accountability and adherence to the law.
Despite promises of transparency, Wongbe noted the lack of a comprehensive audit of the House, suggesting potential protection of the former Speaker or other individuals. He demanded an explanation for the stalled audit process.
Wongbe criticized Koffa for a statement made in the presence of the President and other leaders, implying that the House would comply with any presidential request. This, according to Wongbe, undermined the Speaker’s credibility and the House’s independence.
Expressing frustration over unmet legal benefits for House members, including fuel allowances essential for visiting constituents, Wongbe urged Koffa to ensure these entitlements are provided promptly.
Wongbe condemned the formation of cliques and blocs within the House, claiming they foster sycophancy and disrespect among members. He specifically called out leaders of the committees on Rules, Order & Administration, and Ways, Means, and Finance for their conduct.
Emphasizing his loyalty to Koffa but insisting on accountability, Wongbe revealed past attempts to address these issues within the House and through private discussions, which were met with insults and threats. He declared his intention to continue advocating for Koffa to fulfill his promises and lead effectively.
Wongbe continued by highlighting the issue of accountability in leadership, stating, “I have consistently engaged you privately to be the leader you said you would be, but my attempts have gone on infertile grounds. Even within our 55th group chat, my concerns were met with insults and dismissals from your supporters. You’ve even gone so far as to label me a rebel for daring to hold you accountable.” He emphasized that his actions are driven not by public sentiment but by a commitment to ethical governance and legislative integrity.
Further addressing the broader implications of Speaker Koffa’s alleged mismanagement, Wongbe stated, “The consequences of these actions are profound. They erode public trust in our institution and weaken our ability to effectively serve the people. As elected representatives, it is our duty to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability. Anything less is a disservice to our constituents and to the principles of democracy.”
Hon. Taa Wongbe’s public statement underlines growing dissatisfaction within the legislature and highlights the need for reform and transparency in leadership. As he pledges to persist in his efforts, the coming weeks and months will reveal whether Speaker Koffa will address these concerns and restore confidence in his leadership.
