MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Families of people undergoing treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in Liberia are raising alarm over what they describe as a shortage of major TB medicines, saying some patients are struggling to obtain drugs needed to continue their treatment.
Several individuals who spoke with the medium independently confirmed that they had encountered difficulties obtaining TB medicines. The reports have raised concerns about possible interruptions in treatment for patients battling the infectious disease.
The families say the shortage is particularly worrying because TB treatment requires patients to take prescribed medicines consistently and for the full duration recommended by health professionals.
According to people familiar with the situation, some patients and their relatives have been searching for the medicines from different health facilities after reportedly being unable to obtain them through their usual treatment points.
Efforts by the medium to obtain an official response from the Ministry of Health regarding the reported shortage had not yielded a response at the time of publication.
It remains unclear how widespread the reported shortage is, which specific TB medicines may be affected, how long the situation has persisted, or whether the problem is linked to procurement, distribution or supply-chain challenges.
The lack of an official explanation has added to concerns among affected families, who are calling for urgent clarification from health authorities.
A POTENTIAL PUBLIC-HEALTH CONCERN
TB is an infectious disease that can spread from person to person, particularly when patients with active pulmonary TB are not properly diagnosed or treated.
For patients already receiving treatment, interruptions can create serious medical concerns. Health authorities and treatment providers generally emphasize adherence to prescribed TB treatment because incomplete or interrupted treatment can contribute to treatment failure and drug resistance.
The reported shortage therefore warrants prompt clarification from the Ministry of Health and other authorities responsible for Liberia’s TB program.
