MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Unity Party National Youth Congress (UPNYC) has adopted a comprehensive resolution aimed at strengthening youth leadership and political engagement, following its retreat held in Gompa City, Nimba County, from February 28 to March 2, 2025. The resolution outlines a broad agenda for grassroots mobilization, youth participation, and the fight against corruption, among other key objectives, to ensure the advancement of Liberia’s democratic values and national development.
During the retreat, the UPNYC recognized the urgent need for strong grassroots mobilization and youth leadership to contribute to the country’s progress. The resolution emphasizes the critical role the Youth Congress plays as the engine of the party, responsible for engaging young people in political and socioeconomic activities. The group also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance and national reconciliation while holding the Unity Party-led government accountable for its promises.
A major highlight of the adopted resolution is a push for grassroots mobilization to attract more young people, particularly first-time voters, into the party. The UPNYC calls for comprehensive training programs and community-based initiatives to engage young people and empower them with the skills necessary for political leadership. The group also advocates for the creation of a permanent Youth Development Section within the Unity Party to ensure youth are well-prepared for leadership roles at all levels of government.
Additionally, the UPNYC has committed to fostering reconciliation among Liberian youth. Recognizing the challenges posed by past divisions, the group calls for programs that promote dialogue and conflict resolution among youth leaders, political groups, and civil society organizations. The emphasis is placed on peaceful political engagement and social cohesion.
In response to the changing political landscape, the UPNYC aims to enhance communication strategies by leveraging digital platforms and social media to mobilize youth activism. The group has proposed training in political communication and public relations to empower youth-led advocacy and ensure the timely dissemination of party policies.
The resolution also stresses the need for continued political education, with workshops and seminars focusing on governance, policy-making, and the electoral process. The UPNYC intends to collaborate with academic and civil society institutions to create platforms for discussion and debate on national policies and governance challenges.
Furthermore, the Youth Congress reaffirms its strong stance against corruption and its commitment to ensuring transparency in governance. It specifically calls on the President of Liberia to address the findings of the General Auditing Commission (GAC) concerning financial mismanagement at the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) and other corruption scandals. An independent investigation into the alleged corruption at the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) is also part of the group’s agenda.
The resolution concludes with a call for the Unity Party-led government to fulfill its promises, particularly in creating sustainable job opportunities for young people, expanding educational and vocational training programs, and strengthening governance structures to ensure transparency and accountability.
The Unity Party National Youth Congress has firmly pledged to uphold the values of democracy, unity, and good governance, and the resolution serves as a blueprint for achieving these goals while empowering Liberia’s youth to play a central role in shaping the country’s future. The resolution was adopted by the National Executive Committee of the Unity Party National Youth Congress on March 2, 2025.
