MONROVIA, LIBERIA – On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Liberian Senate officially signed the joint resolution to establish a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia. The decision was reached during plenary, with twenty-four out of thirty Senators attaching their signatures to the document.
According to our legislative correspondent, initially, twenty-three Senators signed the resolution, but the number later increased by one in a shocking and dramatic turn of events when Nimba County Senator and former rebel leader, Prince Johnson, affixed his signature to the joint resolution. Senator Johnson, following his decision, provided a brief historical account of the Lutheran Church Massacre, which many believe influenced the Senators’ decision.
This latest development marks the beginning of a new chapter and paves the way for the next phase of the campaign. While many Liberians at home and abroad will welcome this decision, others may hold different views, citing concerns of potential witch-hunting and the reopening of old wounds, instead of prioritizing reconciliation and lasting healing.
