NONA DEPREZ, HEAD OF DELEGATION OF EU FORMALLY PRESENTS LETTER OF CREDENCE TO PRESIDENT WEAH

Date:

MONROVIA – Today, Ms. Nona Deprez, the Head of Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Liberia, formally presented her letter of credence to His Excellency George M. Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia.

During the ceremony, President Weah acknowledged the enduring partnership between Liberia and the European Union (EU), emphasizing their commitment to shared values that encompass human rights, democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.

“The EU has been our major partner. We hope to build and strengthen our existing ties while you are here. We hope to work together to achieve those things we all want.”

He praised the EU as an important ally with a partnership rooted in shared values, acknowledging its pivotal role in Liberia’s progress.

“We have empowered women and promoted democracy over the last five years. This was achieved with the support of the EU. We look forward to a better coordination with the EU.”

Ambassador Deprez affirmed the European Union shares the same objectives as the Liberian people for Liberia: peace and stability and sustainable and inclusive development. On behalf of the European Union, she expressed appreciation for the President’s proactive personal leadership for return to constitutional democracy in Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon, and Liberia’s principled and consistent stance against Russia’s illegitimate and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine and its people.

The European Union shares the same objectives as the Liberian people for Liberia: peace and stability, and a sustainable and inclusive development. We want to be part of the journey of creating a better future for young Liberians.”

Ambassador Deprez reciprocated the sentiments, affirming the EU’s continued support for Liberia’s endeavours in advancing democracy, peace, and development.

The Liberian people is once again celebrating constitutional democracy by its active participation and its decisions in the ongoing Presidential and General elections. I want to underline that the European Union Electoral Observation Mission led by its Chief Observer Andreas Schieder, a senior Member of the European Parliament, and currently present in all fifteen counties of Liberia is fully independent, also from the diplomatic missions, and we too are much looking forward to take part of its technical review after the elections. The conduct of peaceful, free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections would send a message far beyond Liberia and could provide an example to peoples all over the world.”

Ambassador Deprez welcomed President Weah’ leadership as “feminist in chief” in working to improve women’s active participation in all strands of the Liberian society and to fight sexual gender based violence. This is not only for the sake of women, but also for the betterment of our entire societies.

She said it is crucial to uphold international rule-based order, to face global challenges such as climate change together. We are stronger together. Team Europe are ready to work with Liberia to create sustainable jobs while preserving Liberia’s rich natural heritage for future generations.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of European Union – Liberia relations since the Commission of the European Economic Community established its first office in Liberia in 1973. The European Union and its Member States have for many years been alongside Liberia and its people as committed partners of your country, together with the international community.
