MONROVIA – In a startling development last night, the Golden Key Hotel, where the Unity Party (UP) has been conducting its election tallying of pink papers collected from polling stations across the country, allegedly came under attack by individuals purportedly affiliated with the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
The incident has raised concerns in many parts of Liberia about the potential destruction of crucial evidence in the ongoing elections.
According to UP representatives who were speaking live on local radio last night, the attack was a deliberate attempt by the ruling party to undermine the democratic process and erase any evidence that could potentially favor the opposition party.
The pink papers being tallied at the hotel are crucial in determining the overall outcome of the elections, making the incident all the more significant.
While attempts were made to contact the CDC for an official statement, they could not be reached at the time of reporting. The absence of a response from the ruling party has fueled speculation and heightened concerns over their alleged involvement in the attack.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, former warlord and political figure Prince Johnson accused the CDC of also attacking the Saniqualle tallying center. Johnson called upon President George Weah to intervene and prevent further violence, urging him to rein in his supporters and ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process.
The alleged attacks on both the Golden Key Hotel and the Saniqualle tallying center have sparked fear among opposition supporters and raised questions about the ruling party’s commitment to a free and transparent election.
The incidents underscore the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during the crucial phase of tallying and verifying the results to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
Joshua Blahyi, commonly called ‘Butt Naket’ is another former notorious former rebel general who spoke on the radio last evening. Blahyi said he was receiving information that CDC thugs were about to assassinate him.
He told Spoon Talk last evening he was worried about the over one hundred young people who he claimed are in his compound undergoing rehabilitation from drug-related drug problems in his compound.
As the nation awaits an official response from the CDC and President George Weah, it is hoped that swift action will be taken to address the allegations and ensure that the electoral process remains transparent, unbiased, and reflective of the will of the Liberian people.
There has been no comment from the Police on the alleged attack last evening.
