LIBERIA: LACK OF CONTRIBUTION FROM NAFAA RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT FUNDING ANNUAL NATIONAL BUDGET

Date:

MONROVIA – Since the departure of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government under President George Weah, the question of the National Fisheries and Agriculture Authority’s (NaFAA) contribution to the Liberian government’s revenue basket has been a topic of discussion among analysts and observers.

The Weah government had anticipated a contribution of US$500,000 yearly from NaFAA to support the government’s development priorities. However, it has been revealed that Madam Emma Metieh Glassco, the Director General of NaFAA, has not made any contributions for the past three budget periods, undermining the government’s ability to fund its initiatives fully.

Sources indicate that Glassco has refused to comply with the law and has been running the entity without meeting the government’s demands. Interestingly, it appears that no significant efforts were made to enforce compliance. According to insiders, Glassco’s influence within the Weah government prevented any action from being taken against her.

Despite efforts to engage Glassco and get her side of the story, she initially agreed to an interview but later postponed it. Subsequent attempts to contact her showed a lack of interest in participating in the interview.

The lack of contribution from NaFAA to the government’s revenue basket has raised concerns about financial accountability and the authority’s commitment to supporting national development priorities.

Analysts are questioning why Glasco has been allowed to operate without consequence and whether there are individuals within the government who have hindered enforcement efforts.

The situation highlights the need for transparency and effective governance to ensure that all entities fulfill their obligations in contributing to the country’s development.

It remains to be seen how the government will address this issue and ensure that NaFAA fulfills its financial responsibilities.

The outcome will not only impact the government’s ability to fund its development priorities but also serve as a test of its commitment to accountability and transparency in managing public resources.
