PRES. BOAKAI FOLLOWS PREDECESSORS, ELLEN AND WEAH, IN SUSPENDING LTA COMMISSIONERS AMID CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has joined the ranks of his predecessors, George Weah and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in suspending Commissioners at the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) amidst allegations of corruption.

This move echoes similar actions taken by former President Weah in June 2020, when he suspended LTA Chairman Ivan Brown indefinitely for unethical conduct. Additionally, in May 2009, former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf issued a 24-hour ultimatum for all LTA Commissioners to resign or face dismissal, citing their role in the 2008/09 budget shortfall.

Howbeit, President Boakai’s decision today comes with immediate effect for Madam Edwina C. Zackpah, Mr. Israel Akinsanya, Mr. Zotawon D. Titus, Mr. James Gbarwea, and Mr. Osborne K. Diggs, Chairperson and Commissioners respectively of the LTA, due to allegations of questionable financial transactions and other malpractices.

Instructing the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to conduct a comprehensive audit, emphasizing the need for cooperation from the suspended officials to facilitate the investigation. He expressed confidence in the inquiry’s ability to uncover any financial impropriety and implement corrective measures to prevent future occurrences.

The President highlighted in the letter the critical role of the LTA in regulating Liberia’s telecommunications sector, stressing the importance of upholding integrity and accountability within the institution. The suspension underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that the LTA operates in the best interests of the Liberian people.

The Liberian leader reaffirmed the UP-led government’s dedication to promoting transparency and accountability across all sectors, urging public officials to uphold the highest standards of integrity in their duties.

Recently, President Boakai took decisive action in the fight against corruption by initiating audits of three crucial government institutions, including the central bank.
