LIBERIA REPATRIATES 1000 REFUGEES FROM GHANA FOLLOWING CAMP DEMOLITION

Date:

MONROVIA – Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow-Nyanti, has announced the repatriation of at least 1000 Liberian refugees from Ghana. The decision to bring back these citizens comes after the demolition of the Buduburam Camp in Ghana, which left many Liberians homeless.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, Minister Beysolow-Nyanti stated that her priority is to ensure that all those affected by the demolition have shelter. Currently, the displaced individuals are being housed in two schools and a women’s development center.

The Foreign Minister revealed that she has been in communication with the Ghanaian Embassy to facilitate the return of these Liberians to their home country.

In a separate development, Minister Beysolow-Nyanti praised her team at the ministry for their efforts in protecting data related to passport handling. She mentioned that they are implementing systems in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Health, Transport, the National Identification Registry, and others, to streamline the passport handling process.

“This is not a political process; it is about ensuring that Liberian passports are respected both within and outside the country,” Minister Nyanti emphasized.

She also highlighted that the passport handling process is crucial for both diplomatic and ordinary citizens, aiming to prevent non-Liberians from obtaining Liberian passports.

Minister Nyanti urged all citizens to protect their identification tools and take pride in being Liberian, emphasizing that the system being put in place is trustworthy and reliable.
