COMMERCE MINISTER MODAD EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT OVER CONTEMPT CHARGE DISCHARGE

Date:

MONROVIA – Commerce Minister Amin Modad has expressed his disappointment following the House of Representatives’ decision to discharge him under a contempt charge. The Minister was summoned to appear before the plenary to explain the recent increase in the price of rice but did not attend, citing travel plans.

Representative Dixon Seboe, supported by other members, argued that Minister Modad was seen attending another event during the time he claimed he would be traveling. This discrepancy led to accusations of disrespect and a contempt charge, as the minister was perceived to have misled the House.

Minister Modad responded by stating that his travel plans were canceled at the last minute, insisting that his initial intention to travel was genuine and not an attempt to avoid the House summons.

“I did not lie about my travel plans,” Modad stated. “The trip was canceled unexpectedly, and I was not refusing to appear before the House.”

The House has now directed Minister Modad to return on Tuesday with documentation, including evidence of his flight cancellation, to substantiate his claim and clear any misunderstandings. He has also been instructed to bring his lawyer to support his case.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions and the need for transparent communication between government officials and the legislative body regarding critical national issues such as the rising cost of essential commodities like rice.
