LRRRC ADMITS ERROR IN FORMER LIBERIAN REFUGEE DRUG USE DATA

Date:

MONROVIA – Following a comprehensive screening and validation of former Liberian refugees, the Liberia Refugees Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) announced a correction to previous information provided regarding drug use among returnees. At the May 28, 2024 MICAT Press Conference, LRRRC’s Executive Director, Hon. Patrick Worzie, erroneously reported the extent of drug use among the refugees.

The LRRRC has clarified that the mistake stemmed from misinformation given to Hon. Worzie by the statisticians involved. Contrary to the initial report, the screening process revealed that only an average number of the returnees were on drugs, not a significant portion as previously stated. The Commission will release detailed numbers on the matter soon.

Apologizing for the error, the LRRRC acknowledged the misinformation shared at the government’s National Platform. As the leading government agency responsible for repatriation, the LRRRC reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate information about the repatriation process. In response to this incident, the commission has taken serious administrative actions against the staff involved in the misinformation.

The LRRRC assures its local and international partners, as well as the public, that it remains dedicated to transparency and accuracy in all its communications and operations related to the repatriation and resettlement of refugees.
