SPEAKER KOFFA CRITICIZES MINISTRY OF FINANCE FOR FAVORING SENATE OVER HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Date:

MONROVIA – At a recent House of Representatives session, Speaker Fornati Koffa voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Finance over its lack of support towards the House. He criticized the Ministry for prioritizing the Senate over the House and lamented the need for the House to beg for funding for an upcoming retreat.

Speaker Koffa’s comments came after a session that included the appearance of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) Commissioner General and officials from the Ministry of Finance. According to Koffa, the LRA has reported significant progress in revenue generation, which contradicts the Ministry of Finance’s claims of financial shortages.

“This situation is leading us to a dangerous conclusion,” Koffa stated. “One which we must address in the interest of coordination among the branches of government. I am disappointed. We in the House of Representatives are prepared to make any sacrifice necessary.”

He further highlighted the disparity in treatment between the Senate and the House, noting, “If the Commissioner General of the LRA comes and says that the House is not performing, we would understand. But for him to report over-performance while the Senate is well taken care of, and the House has only two months of benefits and cannot even secure funds for a retreat, is unacceptable. We have to resort to begging NGOs and for stationeries.”

In a pointed remark, Speaker Koffa expressed his frustration directly to the Minister of Finance, indicating that he held the appearance of the minister in contempt. This highlights a growing tension between the legislative and executive branches over resource allocation and fiscal management.

The House of Representatives’ struggle for adequate funding amidst reports of increased revenue collection raises questions about budgetary priorities and transparency within the Ministry of Finance. As Speaker Koffa and his colleagues call for better support, this issue underscores the need for improved coordination and fairness in government operations to ensure all branches can effectively fulfill their roles.
