MONROVIA – Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to collaborating with all member states and development partners to promote sustainable development in agriculture, roads, rule of law, education, sanitation, and tourism, in line with ECOWAS Vision 2050. This commitment was reiterated during the 65th ECOWAS Summit in Abuja, Nigeria, where President Boakai joined his African counterparts.
President Boakai expressed gratitude to his fellow leaders for recognizing Liberia’s democracy and peaceful transition as a beacon of hope in the region. He emphasized Liberia’s support for ECOWAS’s engagement with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, aiming to dissuade these countries from withdrawing from the regional organization. Boakai also affirmed Liberia’s readiness to participate actively in ECOWAS mediation efforts to facilitate the return of these member states, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and prosperity in the region.
Leveraging the summit’s platform, President Boakai announced Liberia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 period. He sought ECOWAS support, emphasizing Liberia’s dedication to championing the causes of post-war developing states, particularly in addressing issues like migration driven by terrorism, conflict, and climate change.
Boakai expressed optimism for a highly productive outcome from the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and extended his best wishes to all participants for a fruitful summit. Additionally, he joined other ECOWAS leaders in endorsing Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term as Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu appointed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his Special Envoy to mediate efforts to reverse the decision of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to withdraw from ECOWAS.
At the summit, President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s commitment to democracy and good governance, expressing gratitude for the warm reception and support extended to him and his delegation. He thanked his colleagues for their congratulations and unwavering support following his inauguration as the 26th President of Liberia.
The Liberian leader and his delegation are expected to return to the country later today, bringing with them the results of their engagement at the ECOWAS summit and renewed commitments to Liberia’s development and regional cooperation.
