HONORING THE LEGACY OF JOEL CHOLO BROOKS

Date:

LIBERIA – Today, we gather to pay tribute to a remarkable individual, a professional colleague, and a senior brother whose departure has left an immense void in our hearts. Joel Cholo Brooks was a trailblazer in Liberian journalism, one of the first young journalists to own a newspaper, Monrovia Weekend, paving the way for many others.

Through his weekly paper, Cholo empowered countless young Liberians, providing employment opportunities and nurturing their talents. His dedication to developing the next generation of journalists was unparalleled. Cholo’s exceptional work earned him a role at the BBC, where his passion for journalism shone in every story.

Cholo also established and financed the GNN newspaper and website, operating them tirelessly until his untimely departure. Despite personal struggles, such as his battle with diabetes, he remained a beacon of light and an example of good citizenship.

Cholo’s unwavering determination and perseverance were truly admirable. He never gave up on his dreams, striving for greatness. His indomitable spirit serves as an inspiration to us all.

Today, as we bid farewell, we mourn the loss of a true icon in Liberian media. His legacy will forever be etched in our hearts. The impact he made on those he mentored and the wider community will resonate for generations.

Brother Cholo, we miss you deeply and are grateful for the indelible mark you’ve left on our lives. May you find eternal peace and rest. Your memory will forever be cherished, and your light will guide us as we carry on your legacy.

Rest in perfect peace, dear Cholo.

With heartfelt condolences,
