EX-PRESIDENT WEAH TO ADDRESS ARREST OF FORMER OFFICIALS AMID ALLEGATIONS OF MASSIVE CORRUPTION SCHEME

Date:

MONROVIA – Former President George Weah, the political leader of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), is expected to hold a major press conference on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the party headquarters in Congo Town, Monrovia. The press conference will focus on the recent arrests of five key former officials of the CDC administration, a development that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Liberia coupled with other national issues.

The Monrovia City Court, acting on a writ from the Ministry of Justice and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, ordered the imprisonment of two of the five ex-officials: former Solicitor General Cllr. Nyenati Tuan and former Security Advisor Jefferson Karmo. This action follows serious accusations against these individuals and others, including former Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah, former Director of the Financial Intelligence Agency Stanley Ford, and former Controller of the Financial Intelligence Agency Moses Copper.

These former officials face a range of charges, including economic sabotage, theft, illegal disbursement of public funds, theft of property, and criminal conspiracy. The allegations suggest an elaborate scheme to defraud the Liberian government, involving substantial financial misappropriations that have raised public and political concern.

According to the writ, the defendants allegedly conspired to manipulate their positions for personal gain. One of the key allegations involves the unlawful integration of Stanley Ford into the National Security Council, a move that purportedly violated the National Security Act and set the stage for further illegal activities.

The court documents detail a series of events beginning in July 2023, when the defendants reportedly devised a plan to embezzle funds from the government. By September 2023, they had allegedly executed this scheme, transferring significant sums from the Central Bank of Liberia to the Financial Intelligence Agency’s operational accounts under false pretenses.

The financial transactions in question involve L$1,055,152,540.00 and US$500,000.00, which were reportedly withdrawn shortly after the transfers. These withdrawals, according to the charges, were unauthorized and intended for personal enrichment, reflecting a severe breach of public trust and sparking outrage among citizens.

As the nation awaits Weah’s response, members of the former ruling CDC are keen to see how their political leader will address the situation. In separate statements on Monday, July 29, 2024, CDC National Secretary General Jefferson Koijee and senior partisan and former lawmaker Acarous Moses Gray issued stern warnings to the ruling Unity Party government, indicating that the CDC will not stand idly by as their members face what they perceive as politically motivated prosecutions.

Weah’s press conference is anticipated to be a critical moment for the CDC, as it navigates the fallout from these high-profile arrests. The former president’s stance and statements could significantly influence the party’s position and strategy moving forward, particularly as Liberia heads towards the 2024 presidential elections.

The unfolding political drama places Weah and the CDC at a pivotal crossroads. The nation watches closely, awaiting clarity and leadership from Weah amid allegations that could reshape the political landscape and challenge the integrity of Liberia’s democratic institutions.

As the press conference approaches, the anticipation builds. Will Weah defend his former officials and decry the charges as politically motivated, or will he take a different stance in the face of these serious allegations? The answers could have profound implications for his political future and the broader trajectory of Liberian politics.
