POLICE INSPECTOR GENERAL REVEALS OFFICER INVOLVED IN FATAL SHOOTING WAS POSSESSING FIREARM ILLEGALLY

Date:

MONROVIA — The Liberia National Police (LNP) has disclosed that the police officer who shot and killed a 19-year-old boy in Banjor, Virginia, was in possession of an illegal firearm. The incident occurred late Saturday evening in Banjor, Brewerville, where off-duty Inspector David S. Fayiah discharged a firearm, resulting in the death of Mr. Manoba Mohammed.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday in Monrovia, Police Inspector General Col. Gregory Coleman revealed that Inspector Fayiah had been arrested and disrobed, and is currently under investigation. Col. Coleman described the incident as regrettable, noting that the firearm used in the shooting was unregistered and not issued by the LNP.

According to a press release issued by the LNP on August 4, 2024, the shooting occurred around 21:00 hrs at the Banjor Gas Station in Brewerville. Preliminary reports indicate that a confrontation between Inspector Fayiah and Mr. Mohammed led to the discharge of the officer’s personal firearm. Mr. Mohammed was injured and transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Inspector Fayiah is currently in custody at the Central CSD charge of quarters as a thorough and transparent investigation is underway to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. The Police Inspector General emphasized the commitment of the LNP to ensuring justice is served and to conducting all actions in accordance with the law.

Col. Coleman also highlighted a concerning issue within the community: the presence of several unregistered firearms in the possession of individuals unknown to the police. This revelation has prompted further scrutiny and efforts to address the problem.

The LNP has called for public calm and requested that people refrain from speculating about the incident while the investigation is ongoing. The police have urged anyone with relevant information regarding the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation through official communication channels.

In its statement, the LNP extended its thoughts and prayers to those affected by the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and serving the community with integrity and respect. The police emphasized their dedication to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency to maintain public trust and confidence.
