MONROVIA – The Office of the President has dismissed reports that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has withdrawn the appointment of Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi as the Executive Director of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court. In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Presidential Press Secretary Madam Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana clarified that Cllr. Massaquoi is currently on a mission abroad in the interest of the office and is expected to report to the President upon his return.

President Boakai appointed Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi to the position on June 18, 2024. The appointment letter highlighted the President’s confidence in Massaquoi’s ability to lead the office and expedite the implementation of the court’s mandate. The President emphasized the historic importance of this initiative, noting that the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court is crucial in Liberia’s fight against corruption and impunity. “Combating these corrosive practices in our society will contribute to peace, sustainable development, and the prosperity of our country,” President Boakai stated.
This appointment follows the signing of Executive Order #131 on May 2, 2024, which officially established the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court. The signing ceremony, attended by government officials, justice and peace advocates, the interfaith community, and victims of Liberia’s civil conflicts, highlighted the broad support for this significant initiative.
