PRESIDENT BOAKAI CALLS SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE SESSION TO ADDRESS URGENT NATIONAL ISSUES

Date:

MONROVIA – In a move aimed at addressing pressing national concerns, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has called for a special session of the 55th Legislature. The session, announced on Monday, August 26, 2024, is set to begin on Thursday, August 29, 2024, and will continue until Thursday, September 19, 2024.

President Boakai’s decision comes in response to several critical issues that require immediate legislative attention, most notably the Proposed Recast Budget. This special session has been deemed necessary to ensure that these issues are addressed promptly, rather than waiting for the regular legislative session to resume in October 2024.

The call for this extraordinary session is in accordance with Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia. This article grants the President the authority to extend or call a special session of the Legislature, provided that a certificate is signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each House. Having received the required certification, President Boakai moved to officially initiate the session.

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, President Boakai stated, “National interest and the welfare of our people must always be prioritized.” This three-week session is intended to offer the Legislature ample time to deliberate on key concerns that impact the nation’s fiscal stability and development agenda.

The President’s proclamation, signed and sealed on August 26, 2024, aligns fully with the constitutional and statutory mandates of the Republic of Liberia. The special session is expected to be a crucial period for legislative action, focusing on measures to support the country’s economic and social progress.

By convening this session, President Boakai demonstrates his commitment to proactive governance, ensuring that the legislative body addresses essential matters that affect the lives of Liberians across the nation.
