LIBERIA CELEBRATES WORLD MARITIME DAY

Date:

MONROVIA – Today, September 25, 2024 is World Maritime Day. This singular day, which is celebrated annually by member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is an all-day event geared at recognizing and celebrating the cardinal role that the maritime industry plays in the global economy and raising awareness about maritime safety, security, and environmental concerns.

First celebrated on March 17, 1978 to mark the date of the IMO Convention entry into force in 1958, this glorious day has been commemorated on the 26thday of September each year since then.

This year’s theme “Navigating the Future: safety first” reflects and speaks to the IMO’s exceptional history of Safety at Sea and its insistence onrigorous and high standard training of seafarers in every member state.

It is self-evident that a great deal has changed since the first Maritime Day was celebrated 46 years ago, but the IMO’s overarching commitment to safety and the safeguarding and sustaining of the ocean’s rich and complex ecosystems for posterity has remained steady, unflinching and unchanged.

This year’s theme gives everyone in the industry a great opportunity to commemorate this legacy in style, as we create a greener and a more sustainable industry.

On this special occasion, the Liberian Maritime Authority (LiMA) congratulates and salutes Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez and all member states and associate member organizations.
