GUAR CRITICIZES WEAH FOR NEGLECTING YOUTH AND BREAKING PROMISES

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Former President George Weah has come under sharp criticism from concerned Liberians who say his leadership failed the nation’s youth, leaving behind a legacy of broken promises, widespread hopelessness, and crumbling public trust.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, April 13, 2025, civil society activist and political commentator Grace RK Guar rebuked the former president’s recent remarks invoking a Nelson Mandela quote, asserting that the message of renewal and perseverance was misplaced. “The quote from Mandela was meant for you,” Guar said, accusing Weah of betraying the hopes of a generation that believed in his rise from modest beginnings.

Guar emphasized that Weah’s administration did little to create opportunities for Liberia’s youth, who had pinned their future on his presidency. She questioned the legacy he left behind, asking, “Where are the youth centers you promised?” She pointed to the absence of critical infrastructure, facilities that could have supported skill development, recreational safety, and access to counseling, arguing that these tools were essential to lifting young people out of poverty, crime, and substance abuse.

“You came with big promises, but you left without delivering,” she added, charging that the Weah-led government mismanaged funds, allowed corruption to flourish, and ignored the pressing needs of the country’s most vulnerable.

Guar’s statement also took issue with Weah’s recent attempts to criticize the current administration. “You now seek to blame the current government for what?” The governance structures you left behind were dysfunctional,” she wrote, rejecting his moral authority to speak on national recovery.

The message ends with a powerful rejection of Weah’s possible return to power. “You say you are coming back. To do what, disappoint us again? Liberians are tired. We want a real change, no more CDC, no more Unity Party. We want something different. Something better.”
