MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia (GoL) has officially released the funeral arrangements for the late Dr. Samuel Kanyon Doe, former President of Liberia, and his widow, Madam Nancy Bohn Doe, former First Lady. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the nation was informed of a series of events aimed at honoring the memory and legacy of the former Liberian leader.

The Book of Condolence for Dr. Doe will be opened on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The signing will commence with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. and members of his Cabinet. Following the President’s tribute, scheduled groups from the three branches of government, diplomatic and consular corps, former government officials, and the general public will be given designated time slots to pay their respects throughout the day.

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the remains of the late President will be removed from the Samuel A. Stryker Funeral Parlour and transported to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, where they will lie in state beginning at 10:00 a.m. Shortly after, the remains will be conveyed under appropriate escorts to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, President Doe’s home county.

A night of wake-keeping will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Albert T. White Sports Stadium in New Zwedru, beginning at 10:00 p.m. and continuing through the night. Final funeral rites will take place the following morning, Friday, June 27, at the Zwedru City Hall, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Upon conclusion of the rites, the remains of both the late President and former First Lady will be laid to rest at the Doe family compound in Zwedru City.

In honor of the former leader’s memory, President Joseph Boakai has declared a period of national mourning beginning Tuesday, June 24 through Friday, June 27, 2025. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast from all public buildings throughout the Republic between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. each day.

President Doe, who ruled Liberia from 1980 until his death in 1990, remains a figure of significant historical importance. The scheduled observances mark the government’s effort to recognize his role in the country’s complex political journey and to provide an opportunity for the nation to reflect on its past.
