MASSIVE CROWD WELCOMES WEAH AT RIA AMID ARRESTS OF CDC SUPPORTERS

HARBEL, MARGIBI COUNTY – Thousands of enthusiastic supporters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) on Monday, September 22, 2025, thronged the Roberts International Airport (RIA) to welcome their political leader and former President George Manneh Weah back to the country following a trip to Europe.

The massive gathering of party faithful, including senior officials and grassroots members, turned the airport grounds into a scene of jubilation. Supporters clad in party colors sang, danced, and chanted slogans in praise of their leader, many describing Weah as “Heaven-sent for the nation.” The atmosphere was charged with excitement as party executives joined ordinary members to reaffirm their loyalty to the former president.

However, the celebration did not come without controversy. CDC Chairman Janga A. Kowo disclosed that some party members were arrested by police officers while waiting for Weah’s arrival. Kowo condemned the arrests and warned that the Liberia National Police could face what he described as “serious political consequences” for what he considered an unnecessary provocation of peaceful citizens.

In remarks to his supporters, Weah thanked the CDC faithful for the overwhelming reception and urged them to continue upholding peace and security across the country. He disclosed that one of his immediate priorities upon returning was to oversee preparations for the establishment of a new national headquarters for the CDC.

Weah’s presence reignited hopes among his loyalists, many of whom see him as a key player in Liberia’s political future. Chants of “2029 is ours” echoed through the crowd, as supporters confidently declared their belief that the former president and his party would reclaim state power in the next election cycle.

Eyewitnesses at the airport described the gathering as one of the largest political homecomings in recent years, underscoring Weah’s enduring popularity among a significant portion of the Liberian electorate. Despite losing the presidency in 2023, his ability to draw massive crowds suggests that the CDC remains a formidable political force.

For many Liberians, Weah’s return marks the beginning of a renewed phase of political mobilization, with the CDC already setting its sights on 2029.
