CUMMINGS REAFFIRMS ANC LEADERSHIP, PROMISES ECONOMIC REVIVAL AND JOBS AHEAD OF 2029 PRESIDENTIAL RUN

MONROVIA – Alexander B. Cummings, political leader of the opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC), has reaffirmed his leadership of the party and outlined a comprehensive plan to revive Liberia’s struggling economy, create jobs, and restore public confidence, as he sets his sights on the 2029 presidential elections.

Cummings appeared on Spoon FM’s “Spoon Talk” on Sunday, October 5, 2025, where he criticized the current government, describing Liberia as “hard” and highlighting the challenges faced by civil servants, businesses, and ordinary citizens. “The country is hard, Liberians are suffering, civil servants are underpaid, businesses are shutting down, the economy is not growing, and the country is in bad shape. The Rescue Government is not rescuing our people,” he said.

He pointed to Liberia’s vast natural resources, saying the wealth of the nation has not translated into improved livelihoods. “Liberia is rich in resources but our people are poor. The government is wastefully spending on buying expensive vehicles for officials while our people go hungry,” he added. Cummings also gave the current administration a grade of just 3 percent for its handling of education, citing continued failures to improve the system.

Cummings pledged to review all Mineral Development Agreements within the first six months of his administration to ensure Liberia receives its fair share from concessions, including ArcelorMittal. “We should not be asking concessions to build schools or hospitals; they are here to make profit. We will negotiate our fair share and build our own schools and hospitals,” he said, emphasizing systemic reforms to tackle corruption at its root.

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Cummings said the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) failed to deliver on campaign promises. “President Weah lost because the CDC didn’t deliver on major promises to the Liberian people. They voted for the Rescue Mission hoping they would be rescued, but nothing has changed. The ANC is the only option in 2029,” he stated.

Cummings’ remarks followed his reelection as ANC political leader during the party’s 4th National Convention in Kakata, Margibi County, on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The convention, themed “A Real Alternative for Liberia,” successfully concluded with top party officials elected and inducted, including Atty. Lafayette E.O. Gould as National Chairman, Rep. Taa Won as Vice Chairman for Administration, Solomon Abba Kollie as Vice Chairman for Operations, and Musa Swaray as Vice Chairman for Inter-Party Affairs. Several contested positions saw decisive victories: Gould defeated Mohammed Sheriff with 57 votes to 26 for National Chairman, Queenyoun Siah Kpengba won Vice Chairman for Finance & Investment, and Swaray triumphed for Vice Chairman for Inter-Party Affairs.

Following the induction, Cummings urged ANC partisans to remain committed to the party’s mission. “Liberia is too rich for our people to remain poor. We need leaders capable of managing our economy. All ANC partisans must be prepared to work hard to achieve this because no one will willingly give us state power; we have to earn it, work for it, and make sacrifices,” he said. He highlighted the challenge of unemployment among young graduates and promised that, under his leadership, the ANC would create jobs, attract foreign investment, and foster an environment where Liberian businesses can thrive.

Cummings also addressed rumors about his personal life, stating that he will no longer tolerate misinformation regarding his sexuality. “This nonsense about me being gay will no longer slide. I will define myself,” he declared, signaling his determination to reclaim his narrative while focusing on national development.
