MONROVIA – The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has released updated transportation fares across Liberia, setting approved rates for taxi services between Monrovia and major towns in all counties. The new fares, issued on Wednesday, aim to standardize pricing, reduce arbitrary charges, and improve accessibility for commuters nationwide.
In Bomi County, fares from Monrovia to Tubmanburg are now set at $600, while Monrovia to Gbar is approved at $550. In Bong County, trips from Monrovia to Gbarnga are approved at $900, Monrovia to Bong Mines at $700, and Monrovia to Salala reduced from the previous arbitrary $600 to an approved $550. Other routes, including Monrovia to Totota and Monrovia to Zeanzue, have also been adjusted to reflect standardized pricing, with rates ranging from $500 to $2,400 depending on distance.
Similar adjustments were made in Lofa, Grand Bassa, Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Margibi, Maryland, Rivercess, River Gee, Sinoe, and other counties. Notably, long-distance fares such as Monrovia to Harper in Maryland County and Monrovia to Fish Town in River Gee County have been approved at $11,000 and $9,000, respectively, reflecting high-demand and longer travel distances.
The MoT emphasized that these rates replace previously arbitrary fares, ensuring fairness for both passengers and transport operators. Shorter routes, such as Monrovia to Kakata in Margibi County, remain modestly priced at $300, while longer and cross-county trips, such as Monrovia to Zwedru in Grand Gedeh, are approved at $7,000.
Officials noted that the new fare structure is part of broader efforts to regulate the transport sector, enhance commuter confidence, and facilitate smooth movement of goods and people across Liberia. Commuters and transport operators are expected to adhere strictly to the approved prices to avoid disputes and ensure uniformity throughout the country.
The Ministry of Transport further stated that enforcement measures would be in place to monitor compliance, and any deviations from the approved fares could attract penalties in accordance with Liberian transportation regulations.
