FOREIGN MINISTER NYANTI UNVEILS LIBERIA’S 2026 AGENDA AS COUNTRY TAKES UN SECURITY COUNCIL SEAT

RABAT, MOROCCO – Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has unveiled a bold and reform-focused agenda for 2026, declaring that Liberia’s assumption of a seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) marks a defining chapter in the nation’s diplomatic history. Nyanti made the disclosure on January 5, 2026, during a global briefing with Liberian diplomatic staff from Liberia’s Mission in Rabat, Morocco.

Opening the address, Minister Nyanti expressed appreciation to members of the diplomatic corps for what she described as a landmark year in Liberia’s foreign relations. She credited their collective efforts for securing Liberia’s election to the UN Security Council and for the successful establishment of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Center, achievements she said have strengthened Liberia’s credibility and international standing.

With Liberia now seated on the UN Security Council, Nyanti emphasized that the responsibility tied to the role extends beyond the country’s Permanent Mission in New York. She instructed all Liberian missions worldwide to actively support the UNSC mandate by providing timely, evidence-based analysis and relevant information to guide Liberia’s voting decisions and policy positions.

To underscore the significance of the moment, the Minister announced a formal change to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official letterheads, which will now feature the UN Security Council logo. She said the move is intended to project Liberia’s elevated status on the global stage and to strategically leverage the country’s UNSC seat in advancing national interests.

Professionalism and institutional reform featured prominently in Nyanti’s address. She introduced a “Standard of Excellence” for the foreign service, stressing that Liberia’s increased visibility at the international level requires diplomats to demonstrate the highest levels of discipline, ethical conduct, and professionalism.

On the issue of confidentiality, the Foreign Minister issued a stern warning against the mishandling of sensitive information. She emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for breaches and cautioned diplomats against posting official or sensitive matters on their personal social media platforms, warning that such actions could undermine national interests.

Minister Nyanti also outlined plans for a comprehensive foreign service reform roadmap to be rolled out in 2026. According to her, the reform agenda will prioritize improved operational support for missions, particularly those experiencing increased workload, including addressing transportation challenges and expanding staff insurance coverage.

Addressing financial accountability, Nyanti called for an end to unauthorized spending at Liberia’s foreign missions. She stressed the importance of transparent financial management and the timely remittance of all collected payments, noting that fiscal discipline is critical to maintaining trust and credibility.

Shifting focus to economic diplomacy, the Foreign Minister declared that Liberia’s foreign policy must deliver tangible benefits to citizens at home. “Our foreign policy must be felt at home,” Nyanti stated, directing every Liberian mission to prioritize investment promotion and trade partnerships aimed directly at job creation for the Liberian people.

In closing, Minister Nyanti reminded diplomats of the weight of Liberia’s new role, stating, “Liberia’s seat on the Security Council is not just a seat at the table; it is a testament to the world’s trust in our progress.” She added that every Liberian diplomat, “from Monrovia to Tokyo,” now plays a central role in safeguarding the nation’s security and advancing its economic future. The meeting also welcomed the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and concluded with a call for stronger coordination between overseas missions and the Public Affairs Department to ensure a unified and impactful global message for Liberia.
