U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT INDEFINITELY PAUSES IMMIGRANT VISA ISSUANCE FOR LIBERIA AND 74 OTHER COUNTRIES

MONROVIA – The United States Government has announced an indefinite pause on the issuance of certain immigrant visas for nationals of seventy-five countries, including Liberia, a decision that is expected to significantly affect Liberians seeking permanent residence in the U.S. The pause, announced through the U.S. State Department under the Trump administration, takes effect on January 21, 2026, and forms part of a broader review of U.S. visa screening and vetting procedures tied to the “public charge” rule.

In a public statement issued Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development, emphasizing that the measure applies strictly to immigrant visas and does not amount to a ban on U.S. visas for Liberian citizens. The Ministry stressed that the action targets only visas that lead to permanent residency, commonly known as green cards.

“The Ministry wishes to clearly emphasize that this pause applies only to immigrant visas and does NOT affect non-immigrant visas,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry stated. It clarified that tourist, business, student, exchange, and other temporary visas continue to be processed, and that existing valid visas remain valid and are not cancelled.

According to the Ministry, the categories affected include family-based, employment-based, Diversity Visa (DV), and other immigrant classifications. However, it disclosed that the process has not been completely frozen, noting that interviews for immigrant visas will continue as scheduled.

“As of tonight, the Ministry can confirm that even interviews for immigrant visas will continue unhindered. Only the issuance of the immigrant visa is paused pending new guidelines to be issued by the United States government,” the statement said, urging Liberians to rely solely on official information.

The Government of Liberia acknowledged the potential impact of the decision on its citizens and disclosed that it is actively engaging U.S. authorities through diplomatic channels. The Ministry said these engagements are aimed at seeking clarity on the scope and duration of the pause and advocating for fair consideration of Liberian applicants.

The U.S. State Department, announcing the policy shift, said the pause is part of an effort to crack down on immigrant visa applicants deemed likely to become a “public charge.” The Department stated that the temporary halt will allow for a reassessment of immigrant visa processing procedures to ensure compliance with U.S. immigration standards.

“The pause will begin January 21 and will continue indefinitely until the department conducts a reassessment of immigrant visa processing,” the State Department said, underscoring that the action is administrative and review-based, not country-specific punishment.

Liberia is among a broad list of affected nations spanning Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Other countries named include Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Russia, Brazil, Haiti, and Yemen, among others.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding immigrant visa issuance, the Liberian Foreign Affairs Ministry reassured the public that lawful travel to the United States remains open for non-immigrant purposes. “Non-immigrant travel for tourism, study, and business remains open, and Liberians with valid visas may continue to travel lawfully,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry concluded by encouraging calm and vigilance, promising to keep the public informed as discussions with U.S. authorities continue and as new guidelines are issued by the United States Government.
