MARGIBI COUNTY, LIBERIA – The Liberia National Police has launched an investigation following the discovery of human skeletal remains in a black plastic bag at Division-15 in Firestone, Lower Margibi County.
According to a press release issued by the police, the remains were discovered on February 21, 2026, after a report was received by the Margibi County Police Detachment. Officers responding to the scene observed scattered skeletal remains along with several items of clothing.
The police confirmed that the discovery was made in Division-15, Firestone, a community within Lower Margibi County. However, Police noted that the crime scene had already been contaminated by a large crowd before officers arrived, potentially complicating the investigation.
Family members present at the location identified the remains as those of Geraldine Joseph, who had been reported missing since October 2025. The identification has intensified public concern, as the disappearance had remained unresolved for several months.
In keeping with legal procedures, a fifteen-member jury was constituted to examine the remains. The jury subsequently confirmed that the discovered remains were human bones, according to the police statement.
The remains have since been turned over for preservation as part of the ongoing investigative process. Police have not yet disclosed the cause of death or whether foul play is suspected, pending further forensic examination.
In its official statement, the Liberia National Police assured the public that the matter remains under active investigation. “The remains have been turned over for preservation as part of the ongoing investigation,” the release stated, emphasizing that due process will be followed.
The police further indicated that individuals considered persons of interest will be invited for questioning as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and disappearance.
The statement was signed by DCP Sam K. Collins, Chief of Public Affairs of the Liberia National Police. As the investigation continues, residents of Margibi County await answers in a case that has left a family grieving and a community shaken.
