BOAKAI NOMINATES JONATHAN WEEDOR AS NEC CHAIRMAN FOLLOWING BROWNE-LANSANAH’S RESIGNATION

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated seasoned elections administrator Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), signaling a major leadership transition at the country’s electoral body following the resignation of former Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.

The nomination, announced in a press release issued on March 30, 2026, places Weedor at the center of Liberia’s electoral governance at a time when public confidence in democratic institutions remains a critical national priority. His appointment is, however, subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

Pending that confirmation, President Boakai has instructed that Weedor immediately assume duties as Acting Chairman of the NEC. This interim arrangement will remain in effect until the Senate returns from its current recess and takes action on the nomination.

Weedor is no stranger to the NEC. He previously served as Commissioner of the Commission from 2004 to 2020, a period during which he played a significant role in overseeing key administrative and operational areas. His responsibilities spanned Human Resources, Finance, and Procurement, which are core departments central to the effective functioning of the electoral body.

During his tenure, he also served as Acting Co-Chairman, where he contributed to the supervision and management of several electoral processes. His involvement during those years is widely viewed as instrumental in maintaining institutional continuity and operational stability within the NEC.

Beyond Liberia, Weedor has built an extensive profile in international electoral affairs. He has participated in election observation and technical missions across Africa, including engagements in Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria. His work has also included assignments under regional and continental bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union, where he contributed to election monitoring and assessment initiatives.

Academically, Weedor holds a Master of Arts degree with honors in Development Studies, specializing in Development Management, from the School for International Training in Vermont, United States. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in General Forestry from the University of Liberia, reflecting a diverse academic background that blends governance and environmental studies.

President Boakai, in the official statement, expressed strong confidence in Weedor’s qualifications and leadership abilities. The President emphasized that his nominee possesses the competence, integrity, and professionalism required to lead the NEC at a crucial moment in Liberia’s democratic journey.

The President further underscored his expectation that under Weedor’s leadership, the Commission will continue to uphold the core principles of transparency, independence, and credibility in the conduct of elections.

Weedor’s nomination comes at a pivotal time, as Liberia continues to strengthen its democratic institutions amid growing public scrutiny over governance and accountability. The NEC, as the body responsible for organizing and supervising elections, remains central to sustaining political stability and public trust.

Attention will now shift to the Liberian Senate, whose confirmation process is expected to draw significant public and political interest. Lawmakers are anticipated to assess Weedor’s track record, experience, and vision for the Commission before making a final determination.

If confirmed, Weedor will assume full leadership of the NEC, inheriting both the challenges and expectations that come with managing Liberia’s electoral processes in an evolving political landscape.

The nomination was formally communicated by Presidential Press Secretary Atty. Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana, who signed the release on behalf of the Executive Mansion.
