PRES. WEAH ANNOUNCES US$10M COASTAL DEFENSE PROJECT FOR GREENVILLE, WESTPOINT

Date:

LIBERIA –  The Government of Liberia has announced the consummation of US$10 Million in funding for the construction of a Coastal Defense barricade in Greenville, Sinoe County, and West Point in Montserrado County.

Making the disclosure Monday at the Dominion Christian Fellowship Church in Congo Town, H.E Pres. George Manneh Weah indicated that the US$10 million was secured during his participation at the Conference of the Parties (COP27) in November of this year in Sharm EL Sheikh, Egypt.

Erosion has been a hazardous situation confronting the Coastal Counties of Liberia, investigation, and observation have proven that the coastal capital of Greenville is likely to erode if nothing is done to combat sea erosion.

About 40 thousand residents in the affected communities are faced with the challenge of relocating and migrating to other quarters as a means of avoiding the risk associated with such a disaster.

The historical Mississippi Street in Greenville City and the entire Fanti Town have been swept away by the Atlantic Ocean due to coastal erosion.

Coastal erosion is the loss or displacement of land or the long-term removal of sediment and rocks along the coastline due to the action of waves, currents, tides, wind-driven water, waterborne or other impacts of storms, according to environmental studies.

Since 2013, the situation continues to affect the livelihood of residents, leaving some others homeless as well as destroying the view of the third original county of Liberia.

Meanwhile, the Liberian leader has also disclosed that during his visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, he visited the Tinging Base Port Authority, where he secured a Major commitment and technical support to the National Port Authority (NPA) and the Port of Greenville.

Also, he added that the commitment with the Tangier Med Port Authority takes into consideration the transformation and refurbishment of the port of Greenville in Sinoe County, (LINA).
