ABDULLAH KAMARA: A VETERAN GAME CHANGER IN LIBERIA’S TELECOM AND ICT INDUSTRY

Date:

Liberia’s ever-growing Telecom and Information Communication Technology (ICT) industry has gained the desired recognition in Liberia and abroad due to the practical, technical,  and impactful contributions of ICT Veteran Abdullah Kamara, Dr. Darren Wilkins, and other professionals who have worked tirelessly and still working to help improve internet penetration and access in our country to an appreciable level, thus enabling Liberia’s presence to be seen on the digital space globally.

Since 1990 and up to present, Mr. Kamara has meaningfully contributed to our country’s ICT and Telecom industry with his impactful presence that is continuously transforming the lives of  thousands of Liberians and other nationals from diverse backgrounds; as evidence of the establishment of the Network for the Development of Liberia (NETLIB), one of the popular and prestigious vocational training institutions in our country that offers affordable and quality training for young and elderly people, thus preparing them for the job market in Liberia and outside.

As a versatile Entrepreneur and Philanthropist, he has practically promoted Liberia’s culture by giving the unique digital platform for all tribal groups’ representatives in Liberia to perform and showcase their respective culture attires live on a television show that is broadcasted on Tamma Corporation Television.

Established April 2008, Tamma Corporation provides media and communication services through web-publications, offshore IT services in the areas of Application Development, systems administration and monitoring, among other unique services that are helping universities and high schools in Monrovia and other parts of Liberia to effectively have access to digital research platforms that serve as conduit to enhance quality education in Liberia.

From October 2014- July 2016, hon. Kamara, Liberia’s well-experienced ICT Expert smartness enabled him to get a merit-based recruitment as Executive Vice president for Operations at NOVAFONE INC, which enabled him to administer the GSM company’s commercial activities and administration, thus making the company more profitable that enabled Lonestar Cell MTN to purchase NOVAFONE due to its huge subscriber’s level and infrastructure.

Mr. Kamara’s extraordinary ICT/ Telecom performance attracted former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to accommodate him in the government to the position as Commissioner for Service Development and Markets at the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA), which he diligently served from June 2009- September 2013.

The department the ICT/ Telecom Veteran worked with provided oversight, which included the following:  responsible for issuing Licenses to Mobile operators and Service Providers, ISPs, TV & Radio stations, and other telecommunications service providers. Kamara’s supervisory role captured monitoring Competition and Market development, as well as new products and service development, and Regulatory compliance.

On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, a huge admiration greeted the appointment of Mr. Abdullah Kamara as Acting Chairperson of Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. This distinguished ICT expert and Acting Chairman of LTA, has been proactively working to constructively transform Liberia’s digital industry. Kamara’s enviable initiatives include fostering digital literacy, enhancing internet accessibility, and promoting innovation among young people who constitute 70 percent of Liberia’s population.

His nationalistic ICT vision looks at developing Information Communication Technology infrastructure to support advanced technologies like 5G and satellite-based services.

Hon. Kamara, a grass -rooter who values our country’s culture, embarked on one of the transformational initiatives under his leadership at the LTA, which is the much-talked about Digital Village ICT project in Lofa County that is designed at bridging the digital divide and empowering underserved communities. The renowned ICT Expert’s vision aligns with Liberia’s broader goals of economic prosperity and global digital competitiveness.
