MONROVIA – The Archdiocese of Monrovia has announced it will hold a solemn Holy Mass in memory of His Holiness Pope Francis, who recently passed away. The service will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Broad Street, beginning promptly at 3:00 p.m.
The Holy Mass will be presided over by His Excellency Archbishop Walter Erbi, the Apostolic Nuncio to Liberia. The Archdiocese has called upon all priests, religious communities, parishes, lay organizations, youth groups, the Archdiocesan Secretariat, faculty and students of Stella Maris Polytechnic, and the entire faithful community to attend the Mass and unite in prayer for the eternal repose of the late pontiff.
The announcement was made under the authority of Most Reverend Dr. Gabriel Blamo Jubwe, Metropolitan Archbishop of Monrovia, who urged the faithful to come in a “pilgrimage of prayer” to commend Pope Francis to the mercy of God and to seek Divine Providence for the leadership of the universal Church.
“We gather to honor the life and ministry of a servant who dedicated himself to the gospel of Christ and to the poor,” the Archbishop’s statement read. “This Mass is not only a moment of mourning, but also one of gratitude for a papacy that consistently called the Church to mercy, compassion, and unity.”
Attendees are asked to be seated by 2:30 p.m. to ensure a solemn and timely start to the liturgical celebration. The Archdiocese is also encouraging widespread circulation of the invitation and is calling for full participation from all corners of the Catholic community.
The Mass will serve as a powerful gesture of solidarity with the global Church, as Catholics around the world continue to reflect on the life and legacy of Pope Francis, who served as the 266th Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics worldwide.
The Archdiocese says the gathering will be a moment of collective prayer and remembrance, as Liberia joins the universal Church in mourning and hope.
