MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Friday, March 14, 2025, welcomed the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to the Executive Mansion for high-level talks focused on strengthening legislative collaboration and addressing regional security concerns.
During their meeting, both leaders emphasized the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue as a tool for advancing democratic governance. President Boakai and Speaker Bagbin agreed to foster closer cooperation between the Liberian Legislature and the Ghanaian Parliament through capacity-building initiatives and shared legislative practices. The discussions also highlighted the need for unity in addressing common governance challenges.
The talks extended beyond parliamentary affairs to economic and security matters. With Liberia’s 2023 exports to Ghana valued at $27 million, mainly from refined petroleum and palm oil, both parties expressed interest in expanding trade relations. They also discussed strategies to diversify their economic engagement to promote sustainable development in both countries.
Regional security remained a central topic, with the leaders acknowledging the growing threats within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Both sides committed to enhancing collaboration on peacekeeping efforts and regional stability initiatives. President Boakai recognized Ghana’s leadership in regional security and expressed Liberia’s willingness to work alongside Ghana in tackling emerging threats.
Speaker Bagbin’s visit coincides with the ongoing three-day Legislative Engagement Retreat at the Farmington Hotel in Margibi County. The retreat, themed “Unity, Integrity, and Modernization,” brings together Liberian lawmakers and regional figures, including Hon. Ibrahim Rassin Bundu, Majority Leader of Sierra Leone’s Parliament, to discuss legislative reforms and democratic integrity.
The visit also reflects a continuation of Liberia-Ghana diplomatic engagement following President Boakai’s meeting with Ghana’s President-Elect John Dramani Mahama in December 2024 and his attendance at Mahama’s inauguration. Both nations continue to prioritize stronger political, economic, and security cooperation as part of their shared vision for regional development.
Speaker Bagbin expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties. President Boakai, in turn, emphasized that Liberia remains focused on fostering regional cooperation while advancing internal reforms to strengthen governance and economic stability.
