MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Eight candidates have officially entered the race for the vacant senatorial seat in Nimba County, following the conclusion of the nomination period for the upcoming by-election. The by-election, scheduled for April 22, 2025, was triggered by the death of Senator Prince Y. Johnson, who passed away in November 2024.
The National Elections Commission (NEC), led by Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, revealed that while 11 nomination packages were distributed to prospective candidates, only eight were completed and returned by the deadline. Of the eight aspirants, seven are men, and one is a woman. The candidates represent both political parties and independent groups, indicating a diverse field for voters in Nimba County.
Madam Browne Lansanah expressed the NEC’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair election process. She emphasized that the Commission will uphold its constitutional responsibility to deliver an election that reflects the will of the people of Nimba County.
The by-election comes after the passing of Senator Prince Y. Johnson, who died at the age of 72 on November 28, 2024. He was remembered with a state funeral and laid to rest at the PYJ Polytechnic University in Ganta, Nimba County, which was named in his honor. His death has left a significant void in the Senate, prompting the need for a by-election to fill his position.
