LMHRA SEEKS PUBLIC-PRIVATE DEAL TO UPGRADE LAB

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA The Managing Director of the Liberia Medicines & Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA), Dr. Luke L. Bawo, has announced progress in finalizing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement to modernize the Quality Control Laboratory in Careysburg.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, and signed by Communications Manager Momoh B. Siryon, the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) announced that its modernization initiative aims to improve the testing of medicines and health products, as well as strengthen regulatory compliance.

Speaking at the 10th-anniversary celebration of ‘Celebrate Lab’ on April 23, 2025, held at the EJS Ministerial Complex, Dr. Bawo emphasized plans to deploy cutting-edge technologies for tracking health commodities and streamlining routine processes.

‘Celebrate Lab’, recognized as a hub for West African laboratory professionals, researchers, and clinicians, among others.

The meeting which was held under the theme: ‘Propelling Our Professional into the Future of Now’, brought together national and international partners.

LMHRA boss reaffirmed the institution commitment to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) in ensuring compliance with established standards, maintaining accurate laboratory records, and aid regulatory authorities (DRAs).

‘’Adhering to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), ensures laboratories operate in compliance with established standards”.

He highlighted the potential of laboratories to support pharmacovigilance by monitoring and reporting adverse effects of marketed drugs, improving post-market surveillance.

Dr. Bawo at the same time expressed willingness to engage in productive symposium, forging stronger connections within the laboratory community.

“It maintains thorough records and accurate reports of laboratory tests that helps DRAs verify all regulatory requirements are met,’’ Dr. Bawo emphasized.

According to him, Laboratories can partner with DRAs on research initiatives that addresses public health concerns, providing valuable data for assessing drug efficacy and safety in real-world scenarios.

He then revealed that there are many more areas that laboratories could be of support to the Drugs Regulatory Authorities including Batch Testing, Capacity Building, and Skill Development, among other.

Meanwhile Dr. Bawo has cautioned partners to focus on innovation, collaboration, and the unwavering commitment to safety and efficacy in providing best health services for the country.
