LWSC REQUESTS LACC TO INVESTIGATE ALLEGED US$750,000 BRIBE TO LAWMAKERS FOR SPEAKER KOFFA’S REMOVAL

Date:

MONROVIA – The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has called on the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) to swiftly investigate allegations that the institution paid US$750,000 to lawmakers in a bid to orchestrate the removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. The request was made in an official letter addressed to LACC Executive Chairperson, Cllr. Alexandra Zoe, on October 21, 2024.

The letter, signed by Acting Managing Director T. Wilson Gaye, expressed the LWSC’s concern over a press statement issued by the LACC on the same date. In the statement, the LACC claimed it had received reports suggesting that US$750,000 was channeled to lawmakers through accounts held by the Ministry of Transport and the LWSC. The funds were allegedly intended to facilitate the removal of Speaker Koffa from the 55th Legislature of Liberia.

“The management of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation considers this allegation as grave, recognizing its potential to damage the institution’s reputation and disrupt its operations,” the letter stated. In response to the seriousness of the accusation, the LWSC has requested a prompt and thorough investigation to determine the facts.

To demonstrate its commitment to transparency, the LWSC has voluntarily submitted bank statements from its various accounts and granted full access to the LACC for further review. The corporation emphasized its ignorance of the alleged scheme and expressed confidence that an impartial investigation would ultimately clear its name.

“We remain hopeful of a prompt and impartial investigation by the LACC, the outcome of which will ultimately exonerate the LWSC,” Gaye added. Copies of the letter were also sent to the President of Liberia and the Minister of Justice as part of the corporation’s effort to ensure a comprehensive review of the matter.

The allegations have stirred significant public interest, given the gravity of the claims and the high-profile nature of the figures involved. The LACC has yet to issue a formal response regarding its next steps in the investigation.
