MOE SECURES €2 MILLION GRANT TO BOOST EDUCATION DATA SYSTEMS

Date:

MONROVIA – The Ministry of Education has secured a €2 million grant from the European Union (EU) and UNICEF to enhance Liberia’s Education Management Information System (EMIS), marking a significant leap towards data-driven educational reform in the country.

Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah emphasized the transformative power of quality data during the signing ceremony held in Monrovia on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. “Quality data enables informed decisions that benefit every student, teacher, and school,” she stated, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in Liberia’s education system.

This initiative, which aims to improve data tracking in areas such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), will focus on monitoring key factors including enrollment, retention, employment, and resource allocation. It also aims to strengthen partnerships with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to enhance the nation’s educational framework.

During the ceremony, Planning Director Mr. Abdallah M. Housseini pointed to challenges like outdated curricula, limited funding, and weak assessments, positioning the EMIS upgrade as critical to creating an equitable, inclusive, and globally competitive education system.

Development partners, including UNESCO, UNIDO, the World Bank, and UNICEF, have endorsed the project’s potential to improve educational planning, service delivery, and public trust. EU Ambassador Nona Deprez reaffirmed her support, noting the EU’s ongoing investment in Liberia’s education sector, including over $40 million in the TVET sector alone. “Reliable data drives results. Every euro must count,” Ambassador Deprez emphasized.
